 "Great at the price" 2009-12-08
By R. Harrison (Germany)
I tried a pair of somebody's Bose noise canceling headphones on a plane recently and decided I needed something like that for myself. But I didn't want the Bose for two reasons: expense ($300) and bulkiness - I like to travel light.

These Panasonic headphones are far better on both points. The noise reduction is noticeably less than the Bose, but still quite good, and the sound is very acceptable at the price. Unlike the Bose, I could hear e.g. the flight attendant asking me something, but the persistent engine/wind noise was still much reduced. I found I could listen to music or the movie at a pretty low volume, so that I didn't feel quite as battered/oppressed by either the airplane noise or the music.

The headphones become uncomfortable after a couple hours, but I found that I could take them out for about half an hour and then have another go. I travel transatlantic quite often - I'm sure I'll be using them a lot.

Make sure that you use the right size of rubber tip for your ear (the phones come with three different sizes). If you use one that doesn't completely seal the ear channel the noise reduction doesn't work.

 "Railroader" 2009-12-06
By Robert N. Nadeau (Portland, ME)
I work for a freight railroad on trains and have owned other brands of noise-canceling headphones. These are the best yet, and less expensive by more than half than the other (Sony, Seinnhauser,). They do an excellent job of blocking the background noise while still allowing me to hear the other person on the locomotive engine with me. I like the volume control that comes with the phones. They are comfortable to wear. I am very pleased with this purchase.

 "ok but not great" 2009-12-06
By R. BAER (East Lansing, Michigan)
Bought these around the same time as my wife (who travels more) got a pair of Bose over the ears headphones. No comparison in sound canceling ability. On a recent commuter air plane hard to tell if they cancelled anyof the sound. The sound quality is pretty good and the price is low.

"You get what you pay for" 2009-12-05
By Jeffry Joe (Milwaukee WI)
I had high expectations for this product based on other glowing reviews. My goal was to find a smaller more portable replacement for my Bose Acoustic 2 headset. I don't like to carry much weight when I travel. I realized at the time it was a lofty goal. I can't say I was disappointed based on the price I paid but If you are accustomed to good noise cancellation this product will let you down. In fact it doesn't seem much different than my apple iphone earbuds.

 "Awesome!" 2009-04-05
By Hugh Hanna (Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA)
I bought these headphones last year to complement my home studio. Just yesterday got around to listening to them and comparing them to my previous set and all I can say is AWESOME! I spent most of Saturday listening to my "new" mp3 collection. Oh the collection is comprised of the same old songs but thanks to the HPX2000, I'm hearing them unlike I've ever heard them before! I'm not kidding. The high and mid frequencies are crystal clear and dynamic range is impressive. The low frequencies, though while not overly 'thumpy', is very true to life. All of these qualities combine to make the HPX2000 a valuable asset in the audio production process.

I didn't know much about this company before my order but I'm glad I took the gamble. These are crystal clear and very comfortable. I wear them 6-7 hours a day while at work. Please note these are not closed ears so noises around you will be heard. This could be a plus or minus depending on your needs. I can't brag on these enough. Sony, JVC, etc. do not compare and neither do Bose. They are great if you work in an office by yourself and want to hear the phone or computer sounds. Highly recommend.

 "A Great Buy" 2009-12-03
By R. George (Kremmling, CO United States)
I will gladly admit that I am no where close to a sound professional of any sort, but I do know good sound when I hear it. These are fantastic.

The detail is wonderful, as is the range. They beautifully render everything from Alasdair Fraser's intricate violin, to Jim Brickman's smooth piano, to Bach's grand "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor", to the huge drums that accompany Mairead Nesbitt's "The Butterfly" (which, by the way, nothing else I have can really do), to several different types of vocals, to...well you get the point. These are monitoring headphones which means that the bass is not enhanced, but it is accurate. So if you like massive bass, you should probably adjust the EQ of whatever you are using, or pick a different pair. They do a good job at passive isolating (not active noise isolation, just to be clear) from external noise, so you had better sit close to the phone.

The construction seems solid, but time will tell for sure. I've worn them for about 6 hours a day for the last couple of days, and have found them quite comfortable. Lighter than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. They are warm, but not excessively so. If you wear eyeglasses, circumaural headphones like these might press on the ear pieces some which can get a bit bothering. The jack end of the cord is built like a tank, and even has a metal spring on the first inch or so coming out of the jack to further toughen it. The cord is, as the specs say, really long. Great if you are plugging into the back of a computer or moving around.

Overall analysis: great sound for the price (truth be told though, I haven't used anything more expensive), well built, and very comfortable. Now click "add to cart"!

 "Best headphones i've bought." 2009-10-15

Great pair of headphones, amazing sound quality, no leak and comfortable. The price is so low as well for them, i've listened to other Audio Technica headphones that cost more than these, and these have better sound quality. As for no sound leak, i cannot hear anyone outside of the headphones so if you want to listen to your music without distraction

choose these.

"One of my best Amazon purchases" 2009-07-23
By Joshua A. Janusch (Sterling Heights, MI USA)
I bought the ATH-M30 headphones about 8 months ago as a replacement for an old pair of Sony's. I don't use them for professional use, only for listening to music and watching movies and tv shows on my computer. For this use, they are absolutely perfect. They provide great sound quality, very little outside noise (not enough to bug you but enough to grab your attention if someone is calling you) and fit very snugly on the head. I highly recommend these headphones.

These are AMAZING headphones for the price. I have a set that's $70, $30, and $20, and this one blows all of them out of the water. The only problem has been mentioned before - they're uncomfortable if you wear them for a long time. It's really not that bad for how great they sound, though.

These headphones did not meet my expectations. Sound was muffled and seemed distant (like you wanted to turn it up, but couldn't),plus they weren't loud enough to really enjoy 80's metal and/or symphonic rock. They were comfortable on the ears and had excellent noise cancellation properties.

I bought these for working out and other activities. I tried other phones from local retailers but for about the same price, these are much superior in terms of sound quality. I also bought a pair of PMX100 which have even better sound than these, but the PMX60 seem a bit more rugged and sound fine. I plan to buy a couple more pair of these for kids.

"amazing sound- but you may need an ammp" 2009-12-03
By Ricardo95 (NY, NY USA)
I have the HD-580's and mt review says it all, amazing. But I just want to reiterate, YOU NEED A DECENT HEADPHONE AMP to make these reach the depth of your musical soul. 99% of amps (and all MP3 players) amp will NOT provide enough juice to get these speakers sounding as they were meant to be heard. Like putting a cheap amp with high quality speakers in your car. waste of $$. A home amp sends minimal power to the headphones as opposed to high power to the speakers. Find an amp with power to teh headphones as opposed to a preamp outlet. Cranking the volume may make them sound high but not deep and rich. There's a difference.and DO NOT buy these for a portable player or real small home stereo.

"High end sound at an affordable price" 2009-12-01
By J. Vazquez (Virginia)
People who know me best will tell you I am a headphone junkie. I buy pairs all the time, borrow from friends, and generally spend a large amount of time looking at reviews of different cans. It's not that I grow to dislike what I have, but I like to have different headphones for different occasions and musical styles. I recently bought these HD-595 to compliment the open-air Grado's that I have as well, and I'm nothing but happy with my purchase.

The sound these cans produce is amazing. While some people may not care for their generally neutral sound, these headphones are tight, accurate, and revealing in almost all genres of music. Mids are clear, the highs soar, and the bass is as defined as it should be. While I will agree these are not bass heavy headphones, it's fair to say the bass is clean and accurate. Switching from my Grados to these, there is a noticeable increase in the clarity of the middle and high range, though my Grados tend to have a little more sound on the low side (mainly on Rock/Pop). My previous go-to headphones were my Audio Technica's (see my review), but these have replaced them for critical listening at home.

Having tried out a pair of AKG 701 a few days earlier, it's fair to say the sound stage is a little forward for these cans. The 595's sound is like being right in the middle of the stage, with good imaging, though I found the AKG's to have much better imaging, as if you were 20 feet away and picking where sounds were coming from. This might be an issue for classical music, but I still feel these cans do a great job there. In all fairness, the AKG's are $100 more, and I was at a high end audio store using a $800 CD player, and a $600 headphone amp.

If you don't have a $600 amp, don't fear. The impedance of these cans is 50 ohms, which can be driven by an iPod or any headphone jack really. Most headphone above this require an amp, adding to the already significant cost of high end audio. That being said, my Harman/Kardon stereo receiver does an excellent job of providing more power to these headphones than any iPod, and can really show what these can do.

These are comfortable headphones. Very comfortable. The velour ear pads are snug, but do not squeeze your head. I can wear these for hours on end with little fatigue. They are easily the best non portable headphones I own. I say that because these are fairly large in size, so public usage is not their forte. Also, the lengthy cable is great for home usage, but not for anything else. I'll save my Ultimate Ears (see my review) for that.

I might as well mention it, because it seems people these days don't do enough research. These are open-air headphones. People around you will hear what you hear. These were never designed for usage on a bus or train. They were designed to be used in the comfort of your home, and even then, best enjoyed in a quiet room. Virtually all high end headphones are open-style, and if you use headphones around others in quiet areas, there are hundreds of closed-style headphones and ear-buds.

Overall, a great sounding pair of cans for price. For around $170-ish you are getting some serious audio. You can do much better, but the upgraded sound will also need a headphone amp which adds to the cost. These fit my budget and sound needs quite well.

"Very good but not "all that"" 2009-12-01
By James T. Mc Guiness (BALDWIN, NY United States)
I had to buy a replace for my Sony MDR 2509's because I fell out of bed on them and crunched them. They were 4 years old so I thought I'd give these pretty Senheisers a chance--sound unheard. These Senheisers are very good but the few extra dollars for the Sony MDR 2509's are worth it--and I mean it! They put you in the music. The Senheisers have a straight chord which can be stepped on easily and yanked off your head or worse. I shudder to think. The Sony's have a springy type chord that stretches and they may not be as pretty as these Senheisers, but those cans are the best sounding headphone I ever heard. The Senheisers probably won't let most people down and though other reviews recommend an added headphone amp, I got the Rolls, I don't think you need it unless you want more inputs so that others can use their headphones on your system. Maybe the one's who felt the amp was necessary were trying to use the Senheisers on an Ipod or something dinky. But if you have a great stereo or computer with a wailin' sound card, the extra headphone amp is just an input multiplier and the amp, (at least the Rolls I got) is just not necessary. If I had it to do over again it would be Sony MDR 2509's all the way. The Sony 2506's are a lot cheaper and sound almost as good but they have problematic design that makes them IMO much easier to break and less comfortable to lay down on your side with. The Sony 2509's are cannons with metal covers and not pretty plastic that lets some of the sound escape. Get the Sony MDR 2509s. You won't regret it.

By Paul F. Mccarthy
I have a home office and have tried and owned many different types of headphones over the years so that I can listen to music while working. The Sennheiser HD-595 headphones are some of the best I have ever owned and far and away the best in their price range. They are extremely comfortable to wera - even for extended periods, and the sound quality is truly outstanding. This model has been out for some time so the discounted price, plus free shipping made this one of my best Amazon purchases to date. Note that the outstanding sound quality leverages an open (not a sealed) earpiece design meaning someone sitting close by may be able to hear what you're listening to.

"Great sound and comfortable, but LEAK" 2009-11-14
By Scott M. Morris (Jacksonville, FL)
A few days ago, I removed these headphones from the packaging, plugged them into my Mac, started up iTunes, and was instantly blown away by the sound quality, despite the WEAK bass response. They're very comfortable and stylish, as I assessed from pictures online, so I figured I had made an overall wise investment. But after listening to a couple songs, my roommate kept telling me to turn my music down, even though I was playing acoustic tracks! I knew these weren't NC, so I assumed a little leakage was normal. If you play music with the headphones off your head, it's almost as if they have external speakers. The bottom line: if you ever want to listen to the HD-595's in public, or just at any measurable volume, they're not for you. The most important spec with headphones is sound isolation. Period. Pay practically the same price and get the PXC-350's.

Read the review from "A. Liu." I believe he's still the "most helpful critical review."

"PortaPro great for the money with some minor flaws" 2009-11-30
By GMO GARZA (SAGINAW,MI)
I just bought the PortaPros a little while ago and I have to say that I really do love these headphones. They are some of the best sounding headphones I have heard rivaling my Bose Over-Ear's. Some problems some folks might have with these headphones are portability, sound leak and style. Although these roll up into a ball for better portability, if you are student like me who has to stuff them in their backpack before class it becomes a problem unless you buy a case like I did, in my case it was a little sandwich box which did the trick. In terms of sound leak, they do leak sound a lot which caused concern at first and still does, however I have found that I can turn up the volume loud enough to hear very well and low enough so others can't hear. Other than that I love these headphones and for $30 and a lifetime warranty I would suggest them to anyone.

 "Terrific Value" 2009-11-30
By Cyle J. Ferguson
Let me start by saying that if you're still using a pair of cheap earbuds to listen to your music, you should seriously consider upgrading to the Koss PortaPro Headphones. For the price they are an incredible value. The sound quality is very good. Details that I had to strain my ears to hear in other headphones are nice and clear. I can even hear some subtleties that I wasn't able to notice before. These headphones are capable of producing great 3D sound and very impressive bass especially considering their size. You'll immediately notice how much information gets lost when you listen to music with the earbuds that they include with your MP3 player.

They're very lightweight yet durable, so I feel comfortable folding them up to take on the road in the carry case. The PortaPros feel good, but for me they sound best when I raise them a bit which makes their presence more noticeable after extended use. I've heard it's possible to get long hair caught in the band when adjusting the headphones (I wouldn't know since my hair is very short). However, I let my mom and sister try them out and neither experienced this problem. Even though the comfort will differ from person to person, I don't think most people will have any problems wearing them. Also, while the design hasn't changed since the 80s, you won't look silly wearing them. It's a retro look but an appealing one that isn't embarrassing.

If the great sound isn't enough to convince you, the lifetime warranty should be. If the headphones break or wear out during normal use, Koss will either repair them or send you a new pair for just the price of shipping. I haven't tested many headphones that compete in this price/quality range, but to me the warranty alone gives these a nice advantage. Bottom line: You won't regret buying these headphones.

 "best headphones ever" 2009-11-27
By Matt S. (Fresno, CA USA)
these are the best headphones i've ever owned in my life. I'm thinking of starting a new religion based upon them where i would go door to door handing out pamphlets explaining the awesomeness of these headphones.

The first thing you will notice when you open up the package, is how awesome they look. you will instantly want to start daydreaming about how cool you will look while wearing them, but don't be distracted, there's a lot more to them than just looks.

They fold up and have a little carrying case, but I don't know why you would ever want to put them away since you'll want to wear them 24/7.

There are 3 tension settings on the ears for light, medium or firm. This can be adjusted with little switches on each ear. i usually like them on light, but sometimes i just need to feel closer to them so i can let them know i really love them, so i switch it to medium or firm.

The sound quality and range is so fantastic that i can fully celebrate my entire catalog of michael bolton albums with such clarity and tone range that its like he is singing directly into my ear.

I'm going to order a second pair soon to see if they will mate so that i might have even more joy in my life.

So open your minds and hearts to your true lord and savior, the Koss PortaPro Headphones and start upon your path to audio salvation.

 "Sennheiser HD-555 audiophile headphones" 2009-12-02
By W. Scott Ingham (Philla. Pa, USA)
After much research I decided on a pair of these headphones. All I can say is WOW!!!!! Great for music and movies. Crisp highs and just as good on the lows as well. Very light weight, after a while with them on you'll forget there on your head. Keep in mind that these are not noise canceling headphones but i personally like that so i can still hear whats going on around me. Excellent value for the money and great service from amazon as usual. You won't be dissapointed with these baby's.

"Great headphones after a little break in." 2009-12-01
By Ian Skinner
Audiophile Sennheiser headphones in this price range are very competitive with other brands' pricier models. They will require a break-in period of around 150 hours at moderate volumes, and it will enable them to provide good bass response. Break in your headphones, regardless of what you read about this process being "anecdotal" (what is 150 hours going to hurt?)

I have tested these on my receiver, my ipod, several headphone amplifiers, both of my guitar amps, a bass amp at Guitar Center (Yes, I got funny looks on that one), my TV, and my laptop. They have a warm sound when compared to Gracos or AKGs. You will be limited by using a compressed format if you plan on using these strictly for an mp3 player or mp3 CD. Don't spend the money if it will primarily be used for this.

If you use a lossless format, these will definitely bring out the best in music and movies. Each instrument is clear and distinguishable. Subtle inflections and timbre are more easily noticed, which can add to the emotion of any piece. I think you'll be pleased with your purchase.

 "Beautiful, just Beautiful" 2009-11-22

.....If you buy these for under 90 or such on amazon you won't regret it.(especially if you have a rewards card) Sound is superb and if you want to have a new experience after they have have a burn in, opening them up and take off the black pad,(AKA the surround reflector) which in part will make it less spacial but more like the Sennheiser HD-595 Premier Headphone making it brighter and better for music or all round use depending on you taste, either way try it after the "burn-in"(20 or more Hours of audio) Many have said the HD-595 is better, but the the doubling of price is what you normally pay for the HD-555 from sennheiser directly.

....Remember if you take the velvet pads of when opening put them on exactly as before because they mold to yon head in part making the E.A.R. so distinctly Good. If you don't one side may be notably louder than the other, thus throwing off the E.A.R. These headphones are extremely forgiving on the ears and feel exception and you probably will not surcease to hearing loss unless you have it on maximum volume for some time. Remember there are two models of this, the 120 OHM and the 50 OHM, The 50 Ohm does not need an amp to drive and is the newer model.

....Some trivia; The Neodymium drive is magnetized so the Negative end is towards the ear and this gives a regenerative effect, while interestingly enough, When the two north negative ends meet they create a scalar effect happening within your brain which in part stimulates the pineal gland particularity.

 "Nice Headphones" 2009-11-18
By J. Denton
The HD-555 are one of the best I've come across. They are very comfortable, and don't clamp down on your head like a vise. Though the bass isn't as deep as I'd like, they provide excellent quality sound. The cord is long and durable. The sound leaks a bit, being an Open Dynamic design, so someone in the same room will be able to hear what you're listening to. The jack at the end isn't the best construction; as it starts with the 6.3mm jack and includes an adapter for 3.5mm. So if you'd like to use these for a computer or mp3 devise, you'll have a thick 4 inch plug hanging off the end. Overall, this is a very nice set of headphones, and I would recommend them to anyone.

 "Fantastic for most all" 2009-11-12
By John Jamieson
These are fantastic headphones for the price. They will please all but the absolute snobbiest audiophiles.

Things to remember

- They are open ear - you can hear others, they can hear you.

- The main plug is full size, with an adaptor for your Ipod or whatever.

- You should burn them in for 50-100 hours. Yes they sound good when you get them, but they will sound better.

- The cord is long...that is the design.

If you want to block background noise or don't want others to hear you, buy the HD280Pro's they are great and that is what they are for! (I love the 280's rugged coiled cord as well)
