"great base, not so much treble" 2009-12-10
By Daniel Robert Diermayer
as the title says, I was really impressed with the base of these headphones, but compared to the other 2 earbuds I have, these just don't perform unless you only care about big bass. The treble just isn't as crisp as similar brands.

 "Good value" 2009-12-10
By neil baller (northern california)
I bought these to test low/mid level ear buds vs. higher end models based on a strong recommendation from a friend.

They're bass heavy, and that takes some getting used to. The product name is accurate! I knew that, and my music tends to be pretty bassy, so these are overkill in that respect. I had to use the EQ in iTunes (not good) to get them to sound right. The highs and mids are just OK.

They're actually pretty good if you just listen to MP3's of pop music. I generally listen to 320kb AAC's and AIF files and I cannot hear the difference between the formats like I can with my AKG 601's or my home and car stereos - no surprise thtere.

They're comfy enough and seem to be relatively well made. I gave them a medium rating because they're just OK. Nothing really special. If you listen to music as frequently as I do (several hours a day, every day, for years) then invest in something better. Going up to $75-100 seems like a lot of money until you've replaced your cheap ones a few times.

I'll be comparing them to some Etymotics pretty soon. This isn't a fair comparison, but who cares?

 "Both Good and Bad" 2009-12-07

The exchangeable pieces doesn't stay in the ears as well as some of the other models and slips out occasionally while running. It is also somewhat fragile, as it died a little over a year after reasonable use and abuse. The low sound, however, is incredible.

"You'll never go back to $10 earbuds" 2009-12-06
By Alexander Dahl (Minneapolis, MN, USA)
I bought these earbuds for $15 with free shipping during a sale, and in the past have mostly used earbuds and over the ear headphones in the $10-$25 price range and have gone through several different brands and models.

They really do have a pretty good sound quality for earbuds, but you have some work to do before you can get the most out of them.

At first I had to mess around a lot with the different sized fittings and how I positioned them in my ears but I eventually found a way to wear them using the medium fittings that was both comfortable and provided an optimal seal. I could get a good seal with any of the sizes but the others were a bit uncomfortable.

The next thing I did was mess around with my equalizer settings. With all of my previous headphones it never really seemed to make a significant improvement overall when I did anything with equalizers but with these it really made a big deal. My sound card drivers have a lot of complicated settings and I also messed around with things besides the equalizer but if you don't have that option or just don't want to bother, you can just go into itunes/winamp/your mp3 player settings/whatever and play with the equalizers there.

Pros:

- Better sound quality than anything else I've tried.

- You can actually hear the bass frequencies.

- 3 different sized fittings for a customizable fit, they are very easy to swap but don't seem like they would ever fall off accidentally.

- Build quality seems good.

Cons:

- It is now more noticeable to me when I am listening to a low quality source or using lower quality headphones.

- You have to fit them snugly to form a seal.

- I had to tweak my audio driver settings on my laptop and the equalizer on my mp3 player to get the most out of them.

If you're an audiophile, you'll probably want to go with something nicer (and more expensive), but I'm just an average guy that wanted some nice earbuds at an affordable price for when I listen to music and play video games and that's exactly what I got.

"My fourth pair just broke!" 2009-12-04
By P. Sieber (Everywhere)
Obviously I like how they sound but my fourth pair (two were replaced under warranty) just broke today. Consider that they stay in my desk or in my ears at my desk while in use. Please just buy something else and save yourself the frustration. My last pair (Vmoda Duo) lasted less than two months. I am so tired of there slow and increasingly rude customer service. It seems the positive reviews on these ear buds are from people who havent been burnt yet. I even bought my mother a pair last christmas- they broke over thanksgiving. While it is a family record for longevity for a pair of Vmodas its totally unacceptable considering I paid almost $100 each for 3pairs.

 "Workout pals" 2009-11-23
By Wiley (USA)
I haven't owned these very long, and I feel bad for those that spent as much as 100 dollars on the earlier versions. I placed an order recently with amazon, and threw these in the cart for one reason. I had read repeatedly, they stay in your ears better than just about any non custom fitted iem. I think they do stay in really well. The sound is not stellar, but not horrible, bump in the bass and treble, more or less what jbl and altec lansing referred to as the "west coast sound" many years ago. They aren't bad for working out though, as the lack of certain midrange detail, lends a sound that, while not great, sort of lets you focus on your lifting, and not listen critically. The construction looks to be lacking where the wires go into the ear pieces. If you're careful not to pull them out by the wires, may hold up a while. The cord is very odd, not like any cloth cord I've ever seen. I didn't expect much, based on the reviews. I'd rather use several other sets, but for heavy lifting, I find them to stay in my ears, no matter what i'm doing. Sort of a trade off. I endorse them for use for during heavy duty physical activity, overall fairly decent sound, the 4 stars however are largely due to this set staying in my ears while lfting, something I want in an inexpensive set of iem's. For sound, 3 and and half stars at most. If you're looking for something to stay in your ears while active, and don't want to use expensive iem's for those activities, may be worth a try.

 "Review concerning MY headphones" 2009-11-14
By Larisa Voronina (El Cajon, CA USA)
I must say these are the greatest headphones i've ever used to date. The earbuds fit like a glove, and block out exterior sound much better than other earphones. Also unlike cheaper sound canceling earphones the rubber sound blocker is good quality and will not irritate the ear even after hours and hours of use. I bought these to replace the 2nd gens I had. Those lasted for about year before I lost them at a party. Either way i've recommended these headphones to anyone who has had trouble with earphones in the past.

"Good sound for the price..." 2009-11-06
By R. Gallardo (El Paso, TX)
First, a brief background on myself: I consider myself an audiophile and enjoy a high-end system in a small media room/studio at home. However, for non-critical listening at the gym or while "mobile," I'll listen to mp3's on earbuds or other similar headphones. I have owned another set of V-MODA earbuds, the Bass Freq model, for two years. Prior to this, my favorite headphones were some Sony studio monitors.

The good: although these units have considerably less bass than the less expensive Bass Freq units, I don't think that's a bad thing. The bass on the Bass Freq model is exaggerated and more than the producers of the music intend. While fun to listen to (and admittedly, habit-forming), it is not faithful to the original recording.

These units, on the other hand, more faithfully reproduce the sound as the original recording production team intended. I would describe this sound as "smooth," for lack of a better term. Good highs, decent lows, good presence, and very good soundstage. They are also "fast" transducers, handling transients in the music better than other headphones I've auditioned, especially at this price point. Also, the sound is never grating and long-listening sessions are possible using these units. I am not sure that you can get much more accurate sound for the price. Note that the V-MODA units sold by Costco (as of the time of this posting) are not Vibe units.

My favorite part is the new cord. It seems to be made of this woven, fabric-looking material. It's a LOT better than the Neoprene-type, rubberized cord on the Bass Freq units, which often got so tangled up that I would spend precious (and embarrassing) minutes standing on the treadmill at the gym untangling it before I started walking. On top of that, these Chrome ones look pretty cool! By the way, they come with six sets of silicone fittings, three in black and three in clear, colorless silicone. You also get a nice "leather" pouch.

The bad: I hope mine don't suffer from the wiring problems that others have reported. Units like these are supposed to be made for portability and the designers better have taken that into account or they'll be hearing from me. Heck, I've had headphones that are over 20 years old that don't have wiring problems. I don't expect these to last 20 years but is 5 years too much to ask? I guess I'll just have to cross my fingers.

"Great Sound!!! Construction Sucks for this much money!" 2009-11-04
By J. Kerkhoven
Purchased these headphones about 16 months ago. The most expensive headphones I'd ever purchased ($68 on sale). The sound quality is superb. They are bass heavy, but that was not a problem once I turned off the bass enhancements on my mp3 player -- these settings are not needed with these headphones as they produce a great low bass all by themselves.

I simply love the soundstage of these headphones: crystal clarity in the highs, mids and a booming bass.

But that does me no good now since the right channel has suddenly and inexplicably developed a short at the connector.

Because of the expense of these headphones, I took excellent care of them. I basically pampered these headphones to insure that I would never cause a short through rough handling or misuse. I always used the cable wrap, never put them in my pants pockets or anywhere that could cause undo stress on the cabling or connector and I took extra care with the connector (which is the point where many of my previous headphones developed a short). I handled these things with kid-gloves in my attempt to avoid just the problem that has happened.

In my search to discover what I could do to get these things repaired, I've come across many, many postings of people who have had the same problem. I would expect that the manufacturer of headphones this expensive with such high quality sound performance would have designed the cabling/connectors to the same quality. The fact that V-MODA would design 'built-in failure' to squeeze out more money from their customers is unethical and a slap-in-the-face to their customers. They could have had a customer for life, but instead, they have lost one.

What a disappointment!
