"Very good but not great" 2009-12-15
By A. Popowycz (Easton, MA)
To be honest, my opinion may be skewed as these were replacements for some Klipsch earphones that I had lost. I didn't want to spend a lot so when I saw these Altec Lansings on sale and with decent reviews I got a pair. Based on a few weeks of use, I'm glad I made this purchase. The sound quality is pretty good. The sensitivity isn't the same as the replaced Klipschs (or even a previous set of Ultimate Ears, presumably on which this set is based) so I need to raise the volume to get the same sound output. They aren't as "transparent" as some of the higher end, multi-armature earphones, but they stack up well against the mid-range competition. In my opinion, if you're looking for heavy bass, these aren't the earphones for you. But for a pretty balanced sound, they do well. Also, while some have complained about the cloth cord, I find it durable as well as flexible. True, it may telegraph noise more than, say, a thin rubber chord, but I generally wear them without much movement so that's not a big problem for me.

"Great Sounding Headphones at a Great Price but..." 2009-12-12
By R. Baker (Madison, WI)
These are a great set of headphones if you can get them to last. However, they are the most fragile headphones I have ever come across. Something in the plug/jack got loose in the two pairs I have owned in two months. Yes, I have had two pairs in two months and the plug/jack went bad on both so most of the time, there is sound only on one side. I thought that I may just have gotten one bad set but it appears there is a flaw in the design and/or they use cheap materials. Now, I have to find all of the stuff that came with them, repackage everything, and go down to the Post Office again and wait up to 4 weeks for a refund. Please take my advice and try a different set especially considering the limited amount of time that you can return the item to Amazon and then would have to get replacements via your warranty. Otherwise, good luck!

 "great headphones" 2009-12-12
By W. An (VA)
I've had these earphones for about 3 months now and I don't have any major complaints about them. I was a bit concerned about the sound interference the fabric covered cords produce that I keep reading about but it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. As long as you aren't moving constantly like working out at the gym the interference is not a major problem. I use them when walking to class and I have no issue with noise interference. The noise reduction is really good though and I can listen to music while studying in a busy room without getting disturbed. Sound quality is really great! so great that when you listen to lower quality songs or mp3s, you can really hear how low quality they are (static etc) but watching DVD movies or listening to high quality music, the earphones really stand out.

Pros:

sound quality is really good

noise cancellation is excellent

carrying case

extra ear pieces to fit your needs

cords don't tangle up easily like non-fabric cords

very durable

Cons:

(minor) noise interference from cords

hard to distinguish left and right without looking for the small L and R

"Very satisified after initial disapointment." 2009-12-09
By B. Endslsy (Port Ludlow, WA, US)
I'm new to the world of MP3's so I was very pleased with the general sound quality of my SANSA Fuzz. The mini- earphones that came with the "Fuzz" are pretty good but they don't stay in my ears very well, so after doing some checking and review reading I decided to try the Lansing Backbeat UHP326. I was initially disappointed when I plugged them in. I primarily listen to Classical Music and the Low frequencies seemed week and the Highs were somewhat shrill. I decided to just let them cycle through a Mahler Symphony for a day or so and that helped a lot. Then I did some fiddling with the "Custom Equalizer", boosting the Base and cutting back on the Highs and that did the trick. I'm now very pleased with them. The only criticism I have is that I would like a smaller size pair of ear tips. I suspect this may be a personal problem. Other than that I would definitely recommend them.

 "Non Biased Review" 2009-12-08
By Dwight D. Sullivan
The Altec's are a fine pair of headphones. Most of the other reviews are accuarate, noise canceling is awesome, sound is good but not great, comfort is alright but not comfortable. The cords do make noise when they rub your chest but its not a big problem. They seem very durable and are very well made. For sound the bose and the sennheiser cx 300's sound better. Hope it helps. For $25 a very good buy.

 "Excellent!" 2009-12-07
By Avishek Shrestha
These are excellent and HUGE step up from the SONY MDR-V600! The sound isolation is good and the headphones bring new life into your existing music collection. You'll hear sounds you've never heard before.

I also have the Grado SR60, and those are very good open-ear phones. These are just as good in terms of sound quality. They are also a significant step up from my previous SONY MDR-V600 (which I didn't like and the foam deteriorated quickly).

I highly recommend it. As usual, Amazon delivery was quick and arrived before my trip.

"The Next Dimension of Audio" 2009-12-04
By Ken Hada (Thousand Oaks, CA)
I won't even say how great the sound quality is, the other reviews have covered that extensively. Bottom line is the sound quality is incredible. Much better than my portable Shure SE530 earphones. Compared to my friends Beats by Dre, these are just as "open" sounding regarding the soundstage. I would say the treble is much more crisp and refined, but not sharp. The bass is tighter and deeper, but overall less powerful. If you enjoy extremely high levels of bass, to the point where it muddies the other frequencies, either get a FAT amplifier and run full bass on the EQ, or buy different headphones...you don't deserve this amazing quality!

Comfort was the only thing worth noting here. The original earpads have gotten a bunch of criticism in the reviews.

When I received these headphones, I did a 10 hour burn in. When i first listened to them, they sounded average. I went online and downloaded files specifically designed for headphone break-in (white noise, pink noise, frequency range sweeps, etc.). Needless to say, after the break in the headphones rose to their true potential.

THOSE WHO DOUBT THE LEGITIMACY OF HEADPHONE BREAK-IN SHOULD READ UP! IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IF YOU ENJOY ACCURATE SOUND REPRODUCTION.

The earpads were somewhat disappointing, they seemed like some really (too) soft foam wrapped in material with the consistency of a garbage bag but thinner. It was sad and seemed very prone to tearing. It was not uncomfortable for me however, after wearing them for 2 hours or so. No sweat, ache, etc.

Despite no complaints I still decided to purchase the aftermarket beyerdynamic earpads. And wow what a difference. Bass is deeper, sound isolation improved, makes the headphones feel lighter, and much more comfortable. The material that covers the foam is excellent. I wouldn't have expected less, these new earpads are German made, the same nation that is renowned for making excellent earplugs so you can sleep on airplanes!

They cost me less than 20 dollars, and considering how long you will keep these headphones (did i mention they sound great?) it would be a wise-investment to give your ears a lounge while they are absorbing the great sounds emitted from the drivers.

DONT SECOND GUESS YOURSELF! BUY THESE HEADPHONES! $65 is a steal!

"Poor SNR, Poor Sound, Sweaty" 2009-12-03
By Kyle Getz
-1 star for the poor signal-to-noise ratio. I plugged these guys into a couple laptops and I immediately heard a very noticable hissing noise. I still heard the hissing even after I started to play some music. I plugged in my old Sony street-style headphones and heard no hissing.

-1 star for the poor sound. It sounds like the engineers really went with a U-shape on the equalizer - the low-end and high-end frequencies are way too high. There's too much bass to the point that it's uncomfortable (and this is coming from someone who loves bass and subwoofers) and the high-end frequencies are so high the music sounds tinny. Again, I plugged in my old Sony street-style headphones and the music sounded normal again.

-1 star for the comfort. Maybe I'm not a fan of leatherette over-the-ear headphones in general, but these headphones made me ears sweaty within a few minutes.

+1 star for the design - it feels pretty solid and folds up nicely for transporting.

All in all, I can't believe these headphones have received so many glowing reviews - I think they stink.

"Probably one of the best values in headphones!" 2009-11-29
By S. Michaelsen
I bought a pair of these to be my 'go anywhere' headphones, since my other headphones are much more expensive and stay at home (Sennheiser HD595s), and I had heard that these are built like a tank.

When I got these, that is the first thing I realized; They are built extremely well. It seems like they'd survive being thrown around in a bag or just generally used a lot. I personally know somebody who has had theirs for 10 years and they still work great!

I've heard that the coating on the ear cups flakes off (Read other reviews). Not a big deal, you can get replacements.

The sound quality on these is fantastic for all kinds of music. My other headphones (HD595s) sound slightly better if it is live music, piano music, jazz, etc. The V6s trounce the 595s when it comes to anything heavy at all (And I'm not talking super heavy here.)

The only thing I found bad about these is the fact that they are listed as circumaural (Meaning they go all the way around your ears, not just rest on them), but really, they are kind of in between supraaural (sit on your ears) and circumaural. They block out sound decently well.

If you need a great pair of headphones to take on the road or are just looking for a good pair of headphones that will last at home for probably an indefinite period of time, pick up a pair of these. The value is phenomenal!

 "It'll do for now" 2009-12-06
By Peter Tenenbaum
Well, first the good news: as advertised, it has not shorted out from sweat during a workout yet (I've destroyed a couple of sets of Apple iPod earbuds this way, so this is a big deal to me). The nominal sound quality is pretty good, and the comfort is pretty good as well; the sound and comfort are good either with or without the foam covers for the earphones.

The one big flaw with these earphones is that they make an extremely good seal in my ear. This means that sweat collects in my ears as I work out. This is a comfort issue, but it's also a sound quality issue: as the workout progresses and I sweat, the sound quality gets poorer and the frequency response shifts (in some cases I also get a bit of an echo or reverb effect). It's tolerable for me, but I only run for about 35 minutes at a time; after that I can dry off the headphones and dry out my ears, and then I can do the rest of my workout with reasonable sound quality. Also, this means that when I am sweaty, the sound quality will vary as I move my head around, since moving my head changes where the sweat runs; so if I bend over for a minute the sound will change, and when I straighten up it will change back.

Great headphones for jogging, withou doubt the best i have had for jogging, they dont fall off and the tolerate sweat and water very well, the main problem for me is that they become a little uncomfortable if you use it for a lonf period( over an hour) and i feel the cable is a little fragile.

 "Excellent sound" 2009-11-30
By Jack Russell Runner (Geneva, NY)
Excellent sound from these headphones. I was looking for smaller ear buds than what come with the ipod, however the ones on these Sennheiser PMX80 are similar in size to ipod buds, but they are still very comfortable while running (especially when using the clip to hold the wire in place). The sound is amazing!

"They work, but they're uncomfortable..." 2009-11-27
By kiddo
I bought these because I was tired of my regular ipod earbuds slipping out of my ears while I ran. These definitely stay on my head, but I don't like the way they fit. They press into my head and hurt my ears (and I'm 5'4" and on the small side). I also didn't like that I could hear the sound of the headband portion of it rubbing against my ponytail -- it was distracting. I still use them, but I just leave them hanging around my neck with the ipod on full volume.

"Excellent headphones, But hurt the ears after long usage" 2009-11-20
By Nathaniel C. Taylor (Balad, Iraq)
This are worth every penny, only problem is I wouldn't recommend wearing for hours at a time while just sitting around. After a while the hard plastic (along with the rubber pieces) hurt the ears. Great for running, a little of a hassle during Benching events though. As the band shifts to the neck, upper part of the head region, which cuts off some of the sound. The cable gets in the way if you lay on it while Benching, the rubber cable clings to you so when scooting up to the bar. Can cause the headphones to yank off your head, or iPod/MP3. Curling weights, The cable attempts to get in your hands, best fix for that is attach the cloths clip (it comes with) to the right side of your shirts neck hole. Other than the minor set backs. (easily fixable) They are by far the best sports (water resistance and durability) headphones I've worn, with great sound quality and performance. Hate the orange color though!! lol

"They're good FOR WHAT THEY ARE." 2009-11-08
By M. A. Lane (Seattle, WA USA)
I got these headphones about a year and a half ago. Two things to note right off the bat:

1. A year an a half ago I knew VERY LITTLE about the technical side of audio.

2. It's stupid of Sony to call these "Studio Headphones" or even "Monitor Series" headphones.

FIRST OFF, know that these are not "studio quality" by any means, and will be horrible for use in any home or project studio, even if you're just starting out. Go spend $100 on some AKG or Sennheiser phones. Spend more if you can afford it. It's an important investment. These don't provide the audio quality necessary for mixing, or the isolation necessary for tracking in the studio. I'm surprised that the specs say 18 Hz to 22 KHz. Those frequencies are DRASTICALLY and unusably attenuated, if even present at all. If you retain one sentence from this review, it should be this one: These are NOT studio headphones.

THAT ASIDE, these are acceptable throw-around, day-in day-out casual commuting headphones. Before I purchased my Yamaha HS series monitors (not the world's best monitors, but they work for me) and AKG K271 MKII headphones, I thought these Sony headphones sounded really really good. Now that I have good headphones to compare them to, they're a horrible muddy mess with a limited frequency response... but I don't really care when I'm walking along a busy, LOUD street, listening to my iPod, or when I want to pack headphones that I'm not worried about breaking and paying to replace. I'm surprised people say they break theirs all the time. They're not bullet proof... but... what the hell do you do to your headphones...? Mine have held up fine. I do prefer on ear headphones for casual listening, as they're not as huge as over ear models, and because I absolutely hate ear buds. The comfort of these are pretty decent, IMO. Could be better, but they're 20 dollar headphones.

IF THIS REVIEW IS TOO LONG, SKIP TO THIS PART.

To sum it all up, for $20 headphones these can't be beat. They're comfy enough, durable enough, small enough, and decent enough sounding for the average consumer... ESPECIALLY the consumer that only wants to pay $20 for something as important as headphones.

 "They'er "aight"." 2009-10-26
By J. Moore (San Leandro, CA)
I've owned this series of headphone for some odd reason, because they're not all that good, more than once. It's a quick fix. They're cheep, and do the job. But that's all they do.

The highs aren't high. The bass is virtually non-existent. It's only so-so high point is the mid range, which isn't all that important compared to the other two items.

The construction, as you'd expect by the price is very.. very cheep. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony started throwing these in cereal boxes for the free toy in a few years.

I have to wear glasses, and during long listening sessions (over an hour) my ears began to hurt since these are an "on the ear" headphone. I wouldn't suggest these to anyone, regardless of price, if they wear glasses on a regular basis.

I won't be buying another set. Ever.
