 "Bose QC15 vs. Sennheiser PXC 450 vs. Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b" 2009-12-11
By Joshua Brooks
Disclosure: I have tried all these on an airplane. I am not an audiophile. Noise Cancelation is the most important attribute to me.

The Carrying Case: All three are quite durable and stiff.

1.) Bose- the smallest, a low profile, room for an Ipod, accessories too.

2.) Sennheiser- Square shape, low profile, however not a lot of room for anything else in case.

3.) Audio Technica- Nice big case if you want to carry extra stuff (Nintendo DS, ipod, etc).

Build Quality:

1.) Sennheiser- you can tell this is built VERY well. Strong plastics, good components, thick cord. Top notch. You feel like you are getting something really high quality.

2.) Audio Technica- Nice solid construction, appears durable.

3.) Bose- If this had a Sanyo logo on the side, I would not have flinched. How can something $300 be so incredibly cheaply made.

Size:

1.) Bose- as far as over the ears go, these are pretty small.

2.) Audio-Technica- mid-sized.

3.) Sennheiser- These are big. No question, but they store flat.

Comfort:

1.) Sennheiser- Very comfortable, will fit almost any size ears. Keep on for hours.

2.) Bose- Also comfortable. I did not experience "highs" discomfort.

3.) Audio-Technica- Perfectly satisfactory. Larger opening than previous AT model.

Sound:

1.) Sennheiser- I actually wore these at home too, simply to hear parts of songs I had never heard before. Astounding. My 10yr old music collection sounded totally NEW.

2.) Audio-Technica- Well balanced, good sound.

3.) Bose- Great sound, but very heavy on the bass. I listen to a lot of rap and pop, so it was mildly annoying. I ultimately had to turn my treble settings up on my ipod to balance the sound.

Features:

1.) Sennheiser- nice cord, push to talk button (temporarily mutes NC and sound which is great for interruptions on airplanes).

2.) Bose/Audio Technica- just the basics. Bose simply an on/off switch.

Price:

1.) Audio Technica- $150 to $225 depending on how you shop.

2.) Sennheiser- $200 to $275

3.) Bose- Hard to find below $300+.

Noise Cancelation:

1.) Bose- No question here, far surpassed the other two. Best Noise Cancelation.

2.) Audio-Technica- Good Noise Cancelation.

3.) Sennheiser- Not sure what happened here. Incredible sound, satisfactory noise cancelation.

Summary:

I ultimately kept the Bose because I was only using these for flying and the Sennheiser's (as much as I loved them) let me down in the Noise Cancelation department. The Sennheiser's had by far the most superior sound, but the Bose Noise Cancelation was night and day. The Bose are made very poorly for a $300+ product, it was disappointing.

Final assessment:

Audio-Technica- best balance of value for money

Sennheiser- Best sound and comfort

Bose- Best Noise Cancelation

"Depends on where you use them..." 2009-12-10
By M. Farese (New York, NY)
I got these because the office I work in is very noisy. It doesn't help with that at all, really. It seems to cut out lower frequency sounds pretty well (so I can see why these would be good to cut out engine noise on a plane, or general noise on a train, for example,) but they do nothing to help with the voices and other various "office" noises that I have to suffer through.

Also, there is another pretty big problem. You know that noise that you hear in your speakers if someone has a blackberry or similar mobile data device near your stereo? They do that. If anyone within (what seems like) about 50 feet has a smart phone that is sending or receiving data you can expect to hear a loud buzzing sound in your headphones until the phone has finished. That is a major flaw to me, but again, if you were on a plane, for example, there's probably not any data being sent or received over the air.

That's my 2-cents.

 "These work!" 2009-12-09
By M. Bishoff (Seattle)
I recently took a trip to India and a friend recommended that I buy noise cancelling headphones to make the trip more pleasureable. What smart advice!

Based on reviews and Audio Technica's reputation I decided to give these a shot. The reviews were decent and the price was right.

The biggest piece of feedback I can provide is that they work! And work well. I like music, but I'm not an afficinado and did not have any bad sound experiences. Bass was nice, but not overwhelming. Mids and treble were about as good as it gets without a built in equalizer.

When you turn these things on, the roar of the jet engine all but disappears. Listening to music and onboard movies is now a pleasure. I have a smidgen of hearing loss and these headphones made that all go away.

Importantly, I had these headphones on my ears for almost 40 hours of flying time. I didn't experience any discomfort and occasionally had to take them off the scratch my ear. While they are slight bulky - my wife said I looked like an alien with them on - they were quite comfortable.

The small zippered pouch on the inside of the case was handy for carrying a couple of extra batteries and the cables. I used the AAA that came with the phones and never replaced it for the duration of the to and from flying. But I did bring along an extra AAA just in case. The phones do not work all that great when turned off so having the AAAs available I think is important. The case is a bit on the bulky side, but very nicely made. Durable sides keep the headphones from getting crushed inside cramped bags.

Overall, really, really happy. I honestly believe these phones made the long trip much more pleasurable and I felt more refreshed than expected. Listening to the constant roar of the engines takes its toll for sure.

You won't be disappointed.

"Good sound quality but terribble noise cancelling" 2009-12-08
By Dmitriy Zasyatkin (Atlanta, GA)
The sound quality was great, including the bass, but the noise cancelling was terrible. With the noise cancelling turned on, you hear a disorientating swooshing sound, even if you try to "sync" it to the environment by turning it on and off. They were comfortable but it did not feel good to have them on for a long time.

I had actually ordered the original, not this "b" model, but Electronics Expo sent me these without a notification about it. They said that they did not have the older model. I am now going to order the previous version from Newegg because I know that they will send me the right ones.

 "Not worth the money" 2009-12-08
By english_august (Madison, WI United States)
Despite reading a bunch of negative reviews about sound leakage, I still bought these headphones assuming that either those reviewers had the volume too high, or, these were stray cases of manufacturing defect. After all, I thought to myself, how can a leading brand of headphones have such an obvious and blatant defect.

Was I wrong! Not only do these headphones have an extremely annoying sound leakage (that is, someone standing next to you can hear what you are listening to), the noise cancellation aspect of the headphones is not great either. With the sound volume at about 40% and the headphones completely covering my ears, my wife could easily hear the sound leak and so could I when she was trying these headphones on. Extremely annoying and there is no ways you can use these in a moderately quite environment.

Got an RMA and will be returning these today. Please save your money and don't buy this - you will be disappointed. For something that costs $130, we deserve a much higher quality than this piece of junk.

 "Great Product" 2009-11-30

These headphones were a gift for my 19 yr old son. He absolutely loved them, said he couldn't have picked out a better pair himself.

 "Great for Analog Music" 2009-11-28
By JohnnyC (Indianapolis, Indiana)
I have an extensive collection of reel-to-reel tapes form the 70's and 80's. These headphones bring out the full range of the music unlike digital which uses compression. Very worth getting if you need full range sound.

"Haven't had long, but already in love!" 2009-11-21
By Lady of Reviews
I just got these headphones in today, but I have to say that I'm already enamored with them.

First off, these are one of the few studio headphones I've tried that are small enough to fit the head of a woman. My husband had recently purchased a pair of Sony MDR-V600s, and when I attempted to wear them at their smallest setting the bottom of the cans rested on the middle of my jawbone, causing extreme discomfort across my jaw and temples after only a couple minutes wearing. NOT SO with the ATH-M40fs. Their smallest setting is just slightly too small, making them a perfect fit!

Not only that, but I wear glasses. Finding headphones that allow me to wear my glasses comfortably (without either pressing them against my temples or against the ridge of my ear) is nigh impossible. These are very comfortable.

They do create a very small pinching sensation, but it seems like the feeling will pass once they've been broken in. They feel just a little heavy, but considering I've only ever worn the lightweight cheap-o headsets in the past, this is just something to get used to! Compared to the Sony MDR-V600s, they feel lighter on my head than the Sonys.

In comparison to the Sonys, the M40fs seem a little "muddled." The sound is not bad at all and is very clear, and will probably get better as they burn in, but the sounds from the Sonys is extremely crisp - which is more suitable for trying to hear tiny details (awesome for things like translating). This pair of Audio Technicas is no stranger to details, however! I'm currently listening to music (and enjoying hearing bass through headphones for the first time ever!) and hearing new details such as a thunderstorm added to the end of a song, that I had never heard before! And to think, the person who made the song is my good friend, and I had still never known it was there until now.

So, for the moment, I will be rating these the highest possible. As time goes on, I will report whether my love for these is lost, or continues with more passion through the years. As of this very moment, I'm considering buying a pair for every person in my family.

 "Worth the $$" 2009-11-18
By Rehab Shopper (SW Florida)
I purchased a set of Bose headphones about a year ago and that's about how long they lasted. One day I put them on and the left speaker would not work. I paid well over $100 for them. The Technica set is great. They are much more comfortable on my head and the sound is nice considering the price tag. I am still afraid to really kick up the volume for fear of blowing a speaker. I use them every day on my treadmill. Would recommend this product.

"Incredible Entry Level product for budding Audiophiles" 2009-11-18
By F. W. Schaefer (St. Paul, MN)
As a recent entrant into the world of audiophilia, I purchased these after reading hundreds of great reviews.

This was the first pair of headphones I paid more than $20 for and it was an incredible difference in both music enjoyment and headphone comfort. I've gone on 8-10 hour listening binges and they're still comfortable.

I went with studiophones because I use these in a typically high-noise environment. If you plan to use your headphones to enjoy extremely high quality reproduction in a quiet environment where no one else will be bothered by audio spill, consider the ATH-AD700 Open-Air Headphones. They cost a little more (still far cheaper than competitors), but having listened to a friend's open-air headphones, it's even more enjoyable, though only if the environment is right.

I only hope you haven't encoded all your CD's to less than 192kbps mp3s, because they will sound terrible now. I had to go about re-ripping to FLAC and have been experimenting with V0 mp3 rips with good success, though at the cost of significant hard drive space.

One thing to note: the relatively high impedance (60ohms) is too high for your standard audio system's headphone output, laptop, or digital music player. You will definitely want a headphone amp, and it definitely makes a difference. I'd recommend looking into the cMOY DIY design, as you can purchase pre-made versions for a very reasonable price.
